Captain Don Walsh handed away on Sunday, 12 November 2023 on the age of 92.
The Society for Underwater Know-how launched a press release saying: “Don Walsh will without end be remembered as a pioneer in exploration and particularly for his well-known first, when he and Jacques Piccard piloted the bathyscaphe Trieste to the deepest level on the planet’s ocean with their dive to the underside of the Mariana Trench in 1960. He can even be remembered for his lifetime of contribution to ocean know-how.
“However for people who had the honour of understanding him, he’ll most be recalled for his humility, kindness and generosity. A real renaissance man and somebody whose attributes we must always all try to emulate.”
Walsh obtained a bachelor’s diploma in engineering on the US Naval Academy, a grasp’s diploma in Political Science from San Diego State College, and a grasp’s diploma and a PhD in bodily oceanography from Texas A&M College.
He enlisted within the US Navy in 1948 and later grew to become the commanding officer of the submarine USS Bashaw (SSKS-241) earlier than turning into the Navy’s first deep submersible pilot.
