Miami College goals to warmth 43 buildings, or 39% of the campus buildings, with geothermal power by 2026. That is consistent with the college’s 2040 carbon neutrality purpose, a big enabler of which is the electrification of heating and cooling methods and utilization of geothermal heating and cooling.

The college expects prices to go down as soon as the geothermal plant begins operations. With the cooling tower serving the chiller plant not essential, utilization of chemical compounds and water for steam manufacturing can be drastically decreased.

Transitioning to geothermal will take the Miami College one step nearer to the targets of carbon neutrality and being an exemplary establishment within the pursuit of decarbonization.

In late 2023, drilling work began on the Oberlin Faculty Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio for the same geothermal heating and cooling system.
