Scanunit Helps Ferry Aurora In First PFAS/PFOS

Battery-powered Öresundslinjen ferry notches up an environmental first with turnkey conversion and decontamination of quickly to be outlawed PFAS/PFOS fire-fighting foam to an environmentally pleasant various.

Scanunit has carried out what it believes is the world’s first alternative and decontamination of a PFAS/PFOS1 foam firefighting system on a business vessel. An IMO decision adopted will see the phase-out of froth firefighting programs that use fluorinated foams containing perfluoro-octane sulfonic acid (PFOS) because the foam-producing element. Due to their destructive affect on human well being and the atmosphere. The longevity of those chemical substances has resulted in them being dubbed ‘Endlessly Chemical substances’.

Work on Aurora concerned the elimination of some 200 liters of AFFF foam containing PFAS/PFOS adopted by decontamination of the tanks, 200 meters of pipelines and 52 spray nozzles of the ship’s firefighting system.

The decontamination was carried out by Scanunit utilizing Sani A provided by LifeClean a specialist chemical supplier primarily based in Sweden. Decontamination and cleansing of the system produced 2,200 litres of wastewater which was eliminated by waste disposal contractor Fortum.
Emptying the system of the PFAS foam started at 22:30 on Saturday and the system was capable of be refilled with a contemporary provide of fluorine-free foam focus by 06:00 on Sunday.

Testing of the system after the changeover confirmed it was now far under the ECHA and EPA restriction of 1 ppm The check carried out by Eurofins laboratory analysts on the Aurora pattern returned a results of simply 4,400ng/l or 0.0044ppm.
