The Chilean Ministry of Power has issued two exploration licenses to Transmark Chile within the province of Colchagua, including one other (but exploitation concession) held by the corporate within the nation.

On January 3, 2025, the Chilean Ministry of Power has issued two geothermal exploration licenses to Transmark Chile SpA (Chilean subsidiary of Dutch renewable power firm Transmark).

The concessions are situated within the Andean area, an space acknowledged for its geothermal potential on account of Chile’s place alongside the tectonically energetic Pacific Ring of Hearth.

The addition of those two concessions builds on the nation’s present geothermal framework, which already consists of eight exploitation concessions. These concession are three concessions held by Geotermica del Norte within the province of El Loa in Antofagasta, two concessions held by Compania de Energia Limitada Enerco and Compania de Energia in Talca-Linares in Del Maule, one concession held by Energia Andina in Chochagua, O’Higgins, one concession held by Copmpania Minera Dona Ines de Collahuasi in Del Tamarugal-El Loa in Tarapaca-Antofagasta, and one concession held by Transmark Chile in Biobio-Malleco, Biobio Araucania.

The concessions issued on January 3, 2025 are:

  • Azufres (13,000 hectares), Colchagua province, O’Higgins Area (VI)
  • Cordillera (6,000 hectares), Colchagua province, O’Higgins Area (VI)

The issuance of the license is predicted to pave the best way for detailed research to confirm the geothermal power capability of the world. Such initiatives are very important for exploring the feasibility of sustainable power manufacturing and will contribute to Chile’s broader efforts to decarbonize its power sector.

Geothermal power is a key part of Chile’s renewable power technique. With its means to supply dependable, baseload energy, it enhances intermittent renewable sources like photo voltaic and wind. The Ministry of Power highlights geothermal as an underutilized useful resource with vital potential to bolster Chile’s decarbonization targets.

Thus far just one geothermal plant is working within the nation, the Cerro Pabellon geothermal energy plant with two items and a mixed energy era capability of 81 MW.
