DOE Aiming $1.3 Billion Towards Main Transmission Tasks

The U.S. Division of Vitality (DOE) says it’s committing as much as $1.3 billion to transmission strains crossing six states, enabling 3.5 GW of further capability to come back on-line within the U.S.

The DOE is getting into into capability contract negotiations with three interregional transmission initiatives that may strengthen grid resilience and reliability, allow the addition of extra clear power assets to the grid, and produce numerous, clear power to extra prospects.

The chosen initiatives are:

Cross-Tie 500kV Transmission Line (Nevada, Utah): Cross-Tie is a proposed 214-mile, 1,500 MW transmission line connecting present transmission methods in Utah and Nevada to extend transmission capability, enhance grid reliability and resilience, relieve congestion on different key transmission strains, and develop entry to low-cost renewable power throughout the area.

The bidirectional nature of Cross-Tie will improve switch capabilities within the West, unlocking elevated entry to renewable power assets within the area.

Building is anticipated to begin in Q1 of 2025.

Southline Transmission Venture (Arizona, New Mexico): Southline is a proposed 175-mile, 748 MW transmission line from Hidalgo County, N.M., to Pima County, Ariz., that may assist unlock renewable power growth in southern New Mexico and ship clear power to rising markets in Arizona that at present depend on fossil gas era.

The mission, which is the primary part of an extended line, will make good use of present transmission rights of method alongside components of its route, upgrading growing old transmission services which can be the supply of congestion and constraints within the area.

Building is anticipated to begin in Q1 of 2025.

Twin States Clear Vitality Hyperlink (New Hampshire, Vermont): Twin States is a proposed 1,200 MW high-voltage direct present (HVDC) bidirectional line that may develop the capability of the New England electrical grid and enhance its resiliency, reliability and effectivity by offering entry to scrub agency power provides in Quebec, Canada.

The bidirectional design of the Twin States line may also enable the New England grid to export energy to Canada when New England is producing extra power than it wants to satisfy its personal demand, which is anticipated to happen because the offshore wind trade in New England expands.

Building is anticipated to begin in Q3 or This autumn of 2026.

DOE anticipates releasing a second spherical of TFP funding within the first half of 2024 by means of a request for proposals which will embody a mix of public-private partnerships, loans, and capability contracts totaling as much as $1 billion.
