Galp, Mitsui to develop SAF, renewable diesel mission in Portugal


Portugal-based vitality firm Galp SGPS S.A. and Japan-based Mitsui & Co. Ltd. on Sept. 25 introduced plans to type a three way partnership (JV) that may develop renewable diesel and sustainable aviation gas (SAF) capability at Galp’s present refinery in Sines, Portugal. 

The biorefinery unit could have the capability to provide 270,000 tons per 12 months of renewable diesel and SAF from waste residue feedstocks, similar to used cooking oil and animal fat. In response to Mitsui, the biorefinery constructed on the Sines website will probably be able to switching between renewable diesel and SAF modes. 

The deliberate JV firm will probably be established as soon as essential authorities are obtained. Galp and Mitsui will personal 75 p.c and 25 p.c of the JV, respectively. The plant will use Axens’ expertise. The consortium of Technip Energies / Technoedif Engenharia has been chosen as the primary engineering, procurement and building administration (EPCM) supplier. 

Preliminary renewable diesel manufacturing is predicted to start close to the tip of 2025, with business operations scheduled to start in 2026. 

Galp on Sept. 25 additionally introduced it’s shifting ahead with a proposed mission to assemble a 100 megawatt (MW) electrolysis plant on the Sines refinery to provide as much as 15,000 tons per 12 months of renewable hydrogen. Plug Energy was awarded the order for the 100 MW proton change membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, while Technip Energies would be the primary EPCM supplier.
