Lowering web emissions by 90% by 2040

The 2040 local weather goal will reaffirm the EU’s willpower to deal with local weather change and can form our path after 2030, to make sure the EU reaches local weather neutrality by 2050. The Fee’s proposal follows a public session which happened from 31 March to 23 June 2023, through which we invited residents and stakeholders to share their views on the EU’s local weather goal for 2040.

The beneficial 2040 local weather goal relies on the Fee’s detailed affect evaluation and the recommendation of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Local weather Change.

Subsequent steps

The Communication launches the method of setting the 2040 local weather goal for the EU. It opens a political debate on the alternatives for European residents and governments on the way in which ahead. This may inform the following Fee, which is able to take workplace after the 2024 European elections.

The subsequent Fee will make the legislative proposal to incorporate the 2040 goal within the European Local weather Regulation and can make sure that the suitable post-2030 coverage framework is in place to ship the 2040 goal in a good and cost-efficient method.
