New facility receives first nuclear waste cargo


Sellafield’s newly operational Field Encapsulation Plant Product Retailer (BEPPS) achieved a milestone by receiving its first cargo of nuclear waste.

BEPPS, an above-ground vault, is supplied to retailer intermediate-level waste safely for the subsequent century.

With a capability for six,681 waste packing containers and the flexibility to deal with as much as 9 packing containers each 24 hours, BEPPS helps the cleanup of Sellafield’s legacy ponds and silos – the UK’s highest precedence nuclear decommissioning programmes.

The latest arrival of the preliminary waste bundle at BEPPS, originating from the Pile Gas Cladding Retailer, signifies progress in addressing challenges related to hazardous waste storage on the Sellafield website.

The ability’s systematic retrieval course of ensures safe dealing with and storage of the retrieved waste.
