New York to Set up Photo voltaic Carport, BESS at JFK Airport






The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York Energy Authority (NYPA) started development of what the state calls its largest onsite photo voltaic plus storage challenge to this point: a photo voltaic carport cover at John F. Kennedy Worldwide Airport. 

As soon as operational, the challenge is anticipated to assist energy the AirTrain and cut back electrical energy prices for residents of low-income neighborhoods in Queens. Positioned within the airport’s long-term car parking zone 9, the JFK photo voltaic carport will likely be erected as a cover and is anticipated to generate 12 MW. The challenge may even embody a 7.5 MW BESS. 

“We’re breaking floor on a game-changing photo voltaic challenge, which is able to give energy to the AirTrain and help 1000’s of households in Queens,” says New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. “Supporting native minority- and women-owned companies, this challenge will deepen our funding in the neighborhood whereas pushing ahead New York’s nation-leading local weather targets.”

The challenge is about to be inbuilt two phases. Section 1 is anticipated to ship power by subsequent March. Section 2 is anticipated to ship power to Con Edison for the encircling neighborhood in April 2026.
